📚 Contemporary Political Theory – Short Notes
What is Contemporary Political Theory?
Political theory is the systematic study of the ideas, concepts, values and institutions that shape political life. It examines important concepts such as justice, liberty, rights, equality, power and the state.
Contemporary political theory combines normative inquiry—asking what politics ought to be—with the study of political realities as they actually exist. The rise of Behaviouralism during the 1950s challenged traditional normative political theory by emphasizing empirical and observable data. This led to an important academic debate concerning the decline and subsequent resurgence of political theory.
Decline & Resurgence of Political Theory
During the 1950s and 1960s, scholars such as David Easton, Alfred Cobban and Peter Laslett questioned the relevance and vitality of traditional political theory. Critics argued that it had become excessively historical and disconnected from contemporary political realities.
Political theory, however, experienced a major revival. Isaiah Berlin emphasized the continuing importance of values, while John Rawls, through his influential A Theory of Justice (1971), helped revive rigorous normative political philosophy. Thinkers including Jürgen Habermas, Charles Taylor and Robert Nozick further contributed to contemporary political thought.
